Learning Objectives: Geography 458

By taking this course, students will taken through a holistic examination of data quality issues as they apply to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and mapping.

A student completing the course should have increased confidence in:

• understanding lineage (sources and transformations that created a source)
• testing all components of data quality
  • positional accuracy,
  • attribute accuracy,
  • logical consistency
  • completeness
• evaluating data quality needs for a specific use
• communicating this information (all three above) to potential users

To attain these objectives, the student should pick a tangible example (a case study) and produce three reports:

Each student's material will be narrowly focused, but the composite of all the case studies will provide exposure to a number of different situations.
