Labs meet in the Sherman Lab (401 Smith) except for discussions and case studies which will meet in Collab 415C (and the few times AD meets in 409 Smith). When sections are meeting in Colab, the Lab (401) will be available to 460 students.

The number of computers available limits the number of students in a lab section. Please attend the lab section that you are scheduled to attend so that each student will have their own computer.

General Information

Sherman Lab (Smith 401)

The Lab policies and help pages are the authoritative source...

  • NO food or drink is permitted in the lab.
  • Use of cell phones is NOT permitted in the lab (or in lecture for that matter).
  • The computers are delicate machines: please treat them with care and respect. Many people (particularly student representatives working on Student Technology Fee proposals) have worked hard to provide you with current equipment.
  • Word processing, email, web browsing is not permitted in the lab time except to support this course. Use the lab sessions to full advantage.
  • Do not load any software onto the computers in the lab.
  • Know how to save your work and protect your data from being lost. Exercises and projects 'lost by the computer' are still late.
  • Other classes and their lab sections (particularly 360) share the Sherman Lab. Please observe the lab schedule posted near the door and on the Geography Lab pages. You will have priority use of the lab during your scheduled lab section. Lab computers (on the west side of room) may NOT be used at any time if there is a class in session, even if there are free machines. Use of the computers during 'open' hours (as well as the east side computers) is on a first come first serve basis.
  • Additional lab space:

There are additional computers (paid for by your student technology fees) located in the Geography student lounge (Smith 411) and in the east portion of 401. These will be available for your exercise and project work. Also, the Collaboratory (Smith 415C) is available on a first come / first serve basis when there are no classes or activities in session.  Please consult the schedule on the Collab door and plan accordingly.

    Materials needed for lab:

Any of your work or data saved on the lab computer's hard drive is liable to be modified or deleted, even if you put it in an out-of-the-way place, since the computers are "cleaned" regularly. You will have storage space on the network servers, but the prudent computer user ALWAYS has a backup! The lab machines all have ZIP drives, these are big enough to backup projects of reasonable scope. You will need to obtain one or two ZIP disks and bring them with you to the lab.

    Hard Drive Working Folders:

You will establish temporary work folders on the hard drive (C:/) of your lab computer.  When you begin work, you will copy your working files to the hard drive and work on the lab exercises.  Remember to save your work regularly, all ESRI products are known to freeze or crash on occasion.

    Backing-up your work:

You are responsible for making back-up copies of all your work.  File corruption or loss of files or projects are not accepted as justification for incomplete or missing assignments.

    Software:

The following software will be used for the lab exercises: Windows, a browser, and ArcMap 8.x. Other software that will likely prove useful during this course includes Winzip, SSH Secure FTP, Word and email (Pine?). Please take the time to familiarize yourself with these tools. All of these have tutorials and/or 'help' that will assist you in their use. Additional information on Windows and browsers are available at UW's Computer Training site. Please observe all UW policies that apply to the appropriate use of University provided software and use of computing labs.

    E-mail and communications:

Please make sure that you have a uniform access account; this username will be your username on the Geography network. E-mail is one of the best ways to pass questions or comments to your TA or to Dr. Chrisman. Notification of assignment changes and updates on lab/course information may be posted in the Announcements section of the website. Please check your e-mail often. TA's usually check their mail several times a day and will respond to students' e-mail questions promptly. If you do not have a uniform access account, access 'Dante' using '(secure) Telnet' at any computer attached to the UW computer network and type 'new' when prompted for a user name and follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

    Lab assignments and due dates:

Your on-time lab assignments will be checked for completeness and accuracy by your TA and returned to you a week after the submission date. The policy on satisfactory completion of assignments is outlined in the course policies.
All lab exercises and case studies are due at the beginning of class one week from the date they were issued, or the date given in the Lab schedule. Exercises submitted after the due date will be checked by your TA and returned to you when the TA is able to make time for it.

    Office Hours:

The TA's are available to help the students from their lab sections during the office hours listed above. TA's will be either in their office (see above) or in the Sherman Lab (Smith 401). It may be helpful to have your questions in written form before you come to office hours. If you are unable to attend these office hours then you may try making an appointment with your TA. Please consult with your TA before seeking help from TAs for other lab sections. Please remember that Dr. Chrisman also holds office hours (TBA; or by email arrangement).

Logging in to PCs in the Sherman Lab:

Each student in geog460 class will have their individual account to access computers in the Sherman Lab. The Lab policies establish the procedures for activating your account in the Geography network. Please follow these instructions when you log in.
    1) Turn the computer on. The computer 'on/off' button is on the front of the CPU below the floppy disk drive. The monitors have a separate 'on/off' switch below the lower right of your screen. Green power indicator lights will light when the computer and monitor are on.
    2) If you are accessing computers for geog460 class for the FIRST time, (after you have pressed "Ctr + Al t+ Delete") when the "Log on to Windows" dialogue box appears, change the Username to YOUR UWnetID (whatever it may be) and the domain should be set to 'GEOGRAPHY', your initial password will be the last 4 digits of your SSN.
    3) You will be prompted to change this provisional password into a new password. The new password must be at least 6 characters, and it will be safer if it is a mixture of upper, lower and a "special character" - as you created password for your UwnetID (you can use that same password by the way).
    4) For students who are late adds (not on the First Day List), please go to your TA for password help.

If, when you arrive at your workstation after someone has been using it and it is already on, you should log on for your own precaution. Go to the Start button and select Shut Down. Then choose the option for closing all programs and logging on as a different user. Log on as above.

    Log out:

  • Please 'log out' when you are finished using the computer.
  • Use the following sequence: Start > Shut down and then select 'close all programs and log on as a different user'. Press 'return'.
  • If you are the last person using the machine, select 'shut down the computer?' Turn off your computer when indicated.
  • Storage Space:

Each student will have a directory (with the name of your UWNetid) on the Geography server in the directory P:\Students\<UWNetID>. You will have adequate space for exercise work. Please manage this space by deleting temporary files. You should create a folder named "geog460" in your directory using File>New>Folder if it is not already there.

    Windows tutorial:

If you have not used Windows 2000 Professional before or would like to refresh your skills, taking the 'tour' is strongly recommended.

  • To access the tour, click on the 'Start' button (lower left of screen) and select 'Help'.
  • The dialogue box that appears has three menus: Contents, Index and Find.
  • Click on "Tour: Ten minutes to using window" to take the tour/tutorial.
  • Clicking on the other items in the 'contents' menu will introduce you to other useful information on utilizing Windows effectively.
  • The 'index' menu will let you search for help on a specific topic while the 'find' menu will let you search for help topics by key words.
  • ArcMap help:

If you have not used ESRI products before, it is advisable to explore the help function:

  • Start ArcMap using the following sequence:
  • Start > Programs > Esri > ArcMap
  • Once it is running, the 'Help' menu is accessed by clicking Help > Help Topics on the top menu bar. It is organized like the Windows help function.
  • The "Introduction" contains a good general description of what it can do.
If you are already familiar with ArcMap from using it in another class (like 360), take a look at the section on "Extensions". 460 will make particular use of Spatial Analyst.
